Spring for Lyme is a fundraiser for Lyme disease research. Proceeds from the 2nd annual Spring for Lyme event will be donated to the Lyme Disease Research Foundation of Maryland and will be used to support the Lyme Disease Association's Lyme-Aid- 4-Kids program.

Lyme-Aid-4-Kids

The national non-profit Lyme Disease Association (LDA), in collaboration with best-selling author Amy Tan, has a fund designed to be used by families with no insurance who need to have their children properly evaluated for possible Lyme disease. The fund is administered by the LDA through individual treating physicians nationwide who agree to participate in the program.

THE GOAL

Our goal is to get children properly diagnosed and treated as early as possible. From 2004 to 2009, over $150,000.00 was distributed to help children from 26 states and Canada. There are so many applicants that the fund often runs out of money.

With your help the Spring For Lyme event intends to change that situation by making a donation again this year. If you would like to send a donation directly to “Lyme-Aid-4-Kids” please send it to:

Lyme Disease Research Foundation of Maryland

LymeMD Mission: 'To improve the quality of life and care of patients with Lyme disease through the advancement of research." Founded in 2007.

GOALS

  • Understand the variability in the presenting symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of Lyme disease as experienced in the community based practice of medicine.
  • Identify biologic variables that are associated with the development of post- Lyme disease syndrome in patients with acute Lyme disease.
  • Test strategies for the treatment of post-Lyme disease syndrome by carrying out randomized clinical trials for the scientific evaluation of potential treatment protocols for post-Lyme disease syndrome.
  • Work toward establishing a consensus within the medical community on strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of post-Lyme disease patients.

STRATEGIES

  • Create clinical database and perform retrospective research
  • Initiate a prospective cohort study of early Lyme disease to examine post treatment long term clinical and immunologic outcomes.
  • Test promising therapies for patients
  • Expand knowledge of physicians and patients, which will be shared through publications and lectures.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • An IRB approved database was created from a retrospective review of patient charts.
  • An initial peer reviewed paper has been published: Diagnostic challenges of early Lyme disease: Lessons from a community case series: John Aucott, Candis Morrison, Beatriz Munoz, Peter C Rowe, Alison Schwarzwalder and Sheila K West. BMC Infectious Diseases 2009, 9:79 Accepted: 1 June 2009.
  • Two more manuscripts are in preparation.
  • The Study of Lyme Immunology and Clinical Events
  • Examining symptom prevalence, risk factors, natural history and biomarkers associated with the development of persistent symptoms following exposure to Lyme disease.
  • 5-year prospective cohort study being conducted through Johns Hopkins at Greenspring/Johns Hopkins at Bayview.
  • The study began in the summer of 2008 and has enrolled a total of 54 participants; 49 of whom are patients with acute Lyme disease while 5 are age and gender-matched controls.
  • Long-term health and immunity after infection with Lyme disease continues to be poorly understood and is a source of controversy among patients and physicians.
  • Treatment trials await development of the biomarkers needed for diagnosis and monitoring of therapy as well as the funding needed to support a treatment trial.
  • In 2009, Dr. Aucott and the LymeMD research team attended four scientific conferences, presented three abstract presentations, and presented “Grand Rounds” on Lyme disease and post-treatment Lyme syndrome to the medical faculty at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
